Kathmandu Durbar Square

Kathmandu Durbar Square Listed as one of the eight Cultural World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Kathmandu Durbar Square is a cluster of ancient temples, palaces, courtyards and streets that date back to the 12th and 18th centuries. It is the site of the Hanuman Dhoka Palace Complex, which was the royal Nepalese residence until the 19th century. There are innumerable monuments such as kumari, the living Goddess, the ferocious Kal Bhairav, the red monkey god, hundreds of erotic carvings, among others.


Bhaktapur Durbar Square

Swayambhunath Bhaktapur, meaning the city of devotees lies about 10 km east of kathmandu and it is also known as Bhadgaun. It covers the area of 5 sq. km and was found by King Anand Dev (889 A.D). The square is one of the most charming valley as it highlights the ancient of the kings perched on top of stone monoliths, the guardian deities looking out from their sanctuaries, the wood carvings in very place-struts, lintels, tympanums, gateways and windows- all seem to form a well orchestrated symphony

There are many monuments of historical significance here, like :
The Lion Gate
This gate in the western part of Bhaktapur has two beautiful stone statues of Bhairav and Durga on either side, built by King Bhupatendra Malla in 17th century A.D.

Golden Gate
This is the main entrance to the famous fifty five window palace, built by Ranjit Malla in 7th century A.D.

This figure, of a scholar and artist king, is seen atop a huge column.

55 window palace
This is the main structure of the entire Durbar Square, which a magnificent edifice is built by Yakshya Malla and renovated by Bhupatendra.

Vatsala Temple
This 17th century stone temple, dedicated to a mother goddess, is full of intricate works on stone.

Pashupati Temple
According to a folklore, a Bhaktapur kind who was a great devotee of Lord Pashupati, had a dream in which lord Shiva told him to build a temple for him so that he could move into it. He obeyed this command and thus the temple came into existence.

Nyatapola
This is the most famous pagoda of Nepal, which was built in 1702 A.D by Bhupatendra Mala. This temple was dedicated to Siddhilaxmi, the tantric mother goddess of supreme power. Nyatapola in Newari means a five tiered symbolizing five basic elements - water, earth, fire, wind and sky.


Patan Durbar Square

Swayambhunath

Patan is probably one of the oldest Buddhist cities in the world. It is believed that city was founded in 3rd century A.D. patan is situated on plateu across Bagmati River. Another name of Patan is Lalitpur. This city is known for its finest traditional crafts artistic heritage. Patan is designed and built after Buddhist Dharma Chakra. It is surrounded by 4Stupas as 4 corners of Patan, one at each corner of its cardinal points. These stupas are said to have been built by the famous Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. It must be remembered that the name of Patan used by Newars in Yala. It is said that King Yalamber named this city after himself. Before These days one can see the beautiful palace complex and squares built during the Malla period.

Krishna Temple
The Krishna Mandir is dedicated to lord Krishna and was build by Siddhi Narsingha Malla in 1637. Many writers have considered this temple as and ornament of Patan. This temple was built in Shikhara style, which is considered to be of Indian influence in Nepal.

Golden Temple
The Golden Temple or Hiranya Varna Mahavihar is the richest temple in Patan. The temple is just tow minutes walk towards, the north f the Durbar Square. The temple, built in the 12th Century, is popular among the Buddhists of Patan. At the main entrance tow lions are guarding the temple. The building has three roofs with copper golden facades. Inside the temple, there are images of Buddha and Boddisattvas.

Other interesting things to see here are Mulchowk, Jagat Narayan Temple, Big Bell, Pillar of Yognarendra Malla, Hari Shanker temple, Vishwanath temple, Bhimsen temple, Marga Hiti, and Mani Mandap, Café Pagoda, Kumbheswor Temple, Rato Machhendra Temple, Minnath, Rudra Varna Mahavihar and so on.


Swayambhunath

Swayambhunath Situated at hill top this is one of the world’s most glorious Buddhist Stupa from where you can have breath taking view of kathmandu valley. This stupa is said to have been built around 250 B.C. its main feature the white dome is identified with spotless pure jewel of Nirvana and thirteen tiered golden spire in conical shape surmounted on the dome. Underneath this towering structure is pair of all seeing eyes of Buddha painted on all four sides of the Stupa.



Pashupatinath

Pashupatinath Pashupatinath is considered one of the holiest shrines of all the Temples. Located on the banks on Bagmati River, this two tiered magnificent golden temple with four triple silver doorways is unique example of the Nepalese temple architecture. It is one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in South Asia with hundreds of Shiva lingams, Shrines icons of various Hindu god and goddess insides.



Boudhanath

Boudhanath One of the oldest and the biggest Buddhist monuments ever built in Nepal. The stupa stands on the massive three level Mandala style platforms surrounded by colorful private family houses. The basic feature of this great stupa is very much like that of swyambunath. This stupa is said to have been built in 5th century A.D. The site is considered very much like Mecca for the Tibetan Buddhists.




Budhanilkantha

Budhanilkantha Situated below Shivapuri hill at the northern end of the valley, Budhanilkantha temple the temple consists of a pound in which lies a great stone figure of the Hindu got Vishnu reclining on the coils of cosmic serpent. The huge statue of sleeping Vishnu is carved from the single block of black stone type not found in the valley.
